The first Battalion Senior Joga Bonito competition was held at Holy Trinty, the home of the 8th Carrick on Wednesday 4th November. What is Joga Bonito, you may well ask? It's a three-a-side indoor football match played with a dull bouncing ball and shooting into very small Unihoc goals.....it may sound strange but it was much enjoyed by all probably because it puts the emphasis on skill and accuracy.
The contest was won by the 5th Carrick A team who won with a clean sweep of five victories, with the winning team being Gary Scott, Jordan Boyce and Phil Reynolds. The decisive 1-0 win was against their own B team who were runners up with this defeat preceded by three wins (including the highest win of the night, 5-0 against the 3rd Ballyclare) and a draw with the 1st Ballyclare. The 1st Ballyclare ended up third having beaten the 1st Whitehead and the 3rd Ballyclare both by 2-0. Both of these teams drew with the hosts before drawing 2-2 with each other. The hosts, 8th Carrick, came fourth with a final 4-2 win over the 1st Ballyclare. The saddest story of the night was the 7th Carrick who turned up five months too early for the Junior Joga Bonito - better luck next time, Dessie and the boys.
Our team was John Fittis, Jamie Cameron and Adam Fittis. Th first two matches against 1st Whitehead and 3rd Ballyclare were identical 1-1 draws in every way with Adam scoring equalisers in the last thirty seconds. It was John's turn next when he scored our only goal in a 3-1 defeat against the winners, 5th Carrick B. The next match was all about what might have been; leading 1-0 through a John Fittis goal with one minute to go we lost three goals to the 5th Carrick B. Finally, we won in the last match.......and finally Jamie scored too! A 4-2 win over third place 1st Ballyclare included a hat-trick from Jamie and a third goal of the tournament from John.
Well done, boys.....especially against several 18 year old six footers in the other teams!
